Pileated Woodpecker
Adult female Pileated Woodpecker working on excavating her nest cavity in a utility pole. Earlier that day we watched her mate working in the same spot. Typically, they nest in dead trees or on poles, creating a new nest cavity each year. Photographed just outside of J. N. “Ding” Darling NWR at the end of wildlife drive. Sanibel Island, Florida.
