Pileated Woodpecker

Adult female Pileated Woodpecker working on excavating her nest cavity in a utility pole. Earlier that day we watched her mate working in the same spot. Typically, they nest in dead trees or on poles, creating a new nest cavity each year. Photographed just outside of J. N. “Ding” Darling NWR at the end of wildlife drive. Sanibel Island, Florida. March 11, 2015

Look for this image to be included on the informative signage along the trail at one of the Waterman Conservation Education Center properties later this summer.
