Immature Black-crowned Night-Heron

True to their name, Black-crowned Night-Herons are much more active night hunters. I’ve only recently had opportunities to see them hunting shortly after sunrise. After the sun fully brightens the sky they often find a comfortable tree and roost for the day. I found this older immature Black-crowned at the Bailey Tract of Ding Darling earlier this month. For a long time I watched him sleep. But when he finally opened that red eye, it glowed in the stunning, golden light of the early morning. He then flew off, presumably to find a nice place to sleep.
