African Wild Dogs
How lucky we were to see these African Wild Dogs in Tarangire, and on the first game drive of our Jan-Feb trip to Tanzania. We encountered a pack of them early in the drive, but they were mostly obstructed by tall grass. We stayed with them and it wasn’t until sunset that they started moving and came very close to our vehicles. We later watched as they only half-heartedly went after a group of Zebras. Amazing encounter! With a population of only 6600, Wild Dogs are endangered and encounters are rare. Habitat loss and fragmentation, human persecution and disease are among the biggest threats to their population.
