Gratuitous Piping Plover Cuteness

Young Piping Plover about 10 days old. This past summer friends of mine took me to a location at Jones Beach on the NY coast where we discovered a family of Piping Plovers with two tiny chicks that were only a couple of days old. The following week we returned and were happy to find the young siblings still strong and healthy, and still resembling cotton-balls as they constantly flitted about the beach looking for food. We gave them space and crouched low. Eventually they ran close enough in our direction to allow us great views. Piping Plovers are classified by the IUCN as Near Threatened and although there are clearly delineated protected areas, they obviously can’t read the signs. While on the beach it is critical to keep your eyes open and give lots of space to the birds that call it their home. June 22, 2017
