Great Egret (Ardea alba)
Nesting season is in full swing in Moss Landing, CA. And it takes a lot of twigs to build a Great Egret’s nest of about three feet wide and one foot deep. On this Sunday morning a small group of us stood on a berm looking up at about 50 Egret, Heron and Cormorant nests high up in the trees.
There was a constant flurry of activity as the birds would fly down to a nearby tree, work to free a twig and carry it back to the nest. Once the eggs hatch the parents will focus their energy on hunting to feed their insatiable nestlings. In the springtime, a nesting bird’s work is never done. April 9, 2017
