Marsh Owl (Asio capensis)

We had been driving through the open plains of Ndutu at the tail end of our late afternoon game drive. Suddenly this Marsh Owl flew up from the ground near the vehicle. It had been well hidden in the tall grass we hadn’t known it was there. For a few minutes we parked and watched as it flew from spot to spot, hunting for small rodents. Marsh Owls are primarily crepuscular (active during twilight) or nocturnal. Occasionally they will hunt during daylight under overcast skies. We were very lucky to find this one so accommodating.
