Gotta Flip the Eggs

One of the most exciting finds of my trip to CA was a nesting pair of American Avocets.  In the late afternoon I had come back to an area where I’d seen them that morning and settled into a new spot for best sun angle.  I looked out and was surprised to see an Avocet sitting on a narrow island amidst the water.  It seemed like such a precarious spot I almost didn’t believe.  But soon it got up and swapped incubation duties with its partner.  The second Avocet, before settling in, turned the front egg a bit to prevent the embryo from sitting in the same position for too long.  Avocets share nesting responsibilities and swap as needed throughout the day.  Although they did not seem concerned about my presence, I didn’t stay long to ensure I caused no disruption.  April 10, 2017
